The Streets of Danzig

The Streets of Danzig

Oil painting by Alfred Pawloskwi

This site explores the streets of Gdansk’s old town, sharing history, photos, and stories from Prussian times and beyond.

For nearly seven centuries, the streets of this Baltic city had names. German names, carried in deeds and directories and family letters, given by the merchants and craftsmen and citizens who built the city block by block. Then, in 1945, most of those names disappeared from maps overnight.

This site exists to document what they were, where they ran, and what they are called today.
