Albrechtstraße

Gronkiewicza, Karola

History

Originally named after the chairman of the merchant association, Kommerzienrat P. H. Albrecht, who died in 1884. Immediately after the war, it was called, in translation, Sport Street. Only in 1952 was it renamed after the meritorious communist and state security agent Karol Gronkiewicz, who distinguished himself by being beaten to death in 1946 by striking stevedores whom he had tried to persuade to give up their strike. It was not until around 1990 that it was renamed after this very stevedores' strike.
