Am Spendhaus
Sieroca
History
Before the construction of the Spendhaus (almshouse) in 1699/1700, the area still belonged to the Vergessene Gasse (Forgotten Lane) during the 17th century. The Spendhaus served primarily as a welfare institution for beggars picked up off the streets.
After the poorhouse was separated as an independent institution in 1788, the Spendhaus was used solely as an orphanage. Thus the building's function evolved from a shelter for the homeless and beggars into a dedicated institution for the care of children.
