Buttermarkt

History

In this locality, which until the 17th century was simply counted as part of the Lastadie, a butter market was established around 1650. Or rather, the food trade that had developed there was officially sanctioned that year. In the 19th century, pottery became the object of trade, and the square was renamed accordingly. In 1897 it received the name Winterplatz in honor of the highly meritorious Lord Mayor Leopold von Winter. After the war, the renaming commission apparently allowed itself a little joke with this square, for instead of giving it a new name, they simply translated the word "Winter" and called it Plac Zimowy. Only in the 1990s did the square receive back its first name, translated into Polish.
