Dienergasse
Służebna
History
This alley originally formed part of the narrow wall passage that ran behind the Right Town wall. The name Dienergasse for the section between Ankerschmiedegasse and Mälzergasse goes back to municipal officials (Stadtdiener, town servants) who were assigned official residences here by the city council. The name is first attested in 1570 in a petition by a customs servant to the council, requesting a more spacious dwelling in the Hohes Tor (High Gate). After the war, which left only ruins in this alley, it continued to appear on city maps until about 1950 as ul. Służebna (Service Alley). The remaining stoops (Beischläge) from the houses here were not demolished until the spring of 2005.
