Elisabethkirchengasse

History

The most important institution in this area in the 14th century was St. George's Hospital. It stood on the site where the Carmelite monastery was later built. Until the 15th century, the naming of this street was based on this hospital. Thus in 1355, including the later Töpfergasse, it was called "weg do man geit czu sinte Jorian" (the way one goes to St. George). Only when the importance of this hospital declined and that of the Elenden-Gilde (Guild of the Wretched) of the Old Town, which held the St. Elisabeth Chapel, increased, was this street called "sente Elsebethgasse" in 1443 and 1456. Töpfergasse continued to be counted as part of it. Only in the 16th and 17th centuries did the name apply in its familiar extent. With the construction of the Old Town wall, this street terminated at the Elisabethtor (Elisabeth Gate). Today its name translates to Elisabeth Lane.
