Fieffingergasse

History

The name Hakelwerk originally means a simple fortification made of chopped brushwood. It encompassed the entire settlement situated at the castle of the Pomerellian dukes. This settlement maintained its special legal status even during the time of the Teutonic Order and was only incorporated into the Main Town in 1454. As late as the 16th century the Polish town hall stood there, at the corner of Nähtlergasse. As late as 1608 the entire area between Hinter Adlers Brauhaus and An der Schneidemühle was called Hakelwerk. In 1624 the well-known alley Hakelwerk, together with Kleine Ölmühlengasse and Am Spendhaus, was called the "forgotten alley." J. Hevelke mentions this street in his family history also under the name Fieffingergasse, since five alleys branch off from it like the fingers of a hand.
