Flachsgasse
History
The designation platea secunda comes from the fact that initially the streets on Speicherinsel (Granary Island) were numbered, once from the north toward Milchkannengasse, and a second time starting at Milchkannengasse heading south. Thus our alley was simply called Second Street. Already in 1643 the name Münchengasse appeared — from a granary at the Mattenbudischer Tor that was in monastic possession. The temporarily used name Flachsgasse (Flax Lane) goes back to a flax scales located at the corner of Hopfengasse. Since the war its name translates to Rye Lane.
