Friedrich - Wilhelm - Platz

History

This was the name given, after its winding paths, to a garden complex that stood on the site of the present railway embankment at the Olivaer Tor. It was also the first square in Danzig to be named after a famous personality who had no connection whatsoever to this place — in 1809 as Napoleonsplatz. The second attempt of this kind — around 1840 as Friedrich-Wilhelm-Platz — also failed. The Danzigers simply preferred their labyrinth (Irrgarten) to unwavering rulers. After the demolition of the ramparts and the reconstruction of the entire area, this name was only used for the railway bridge. And that remained the case after the war as well.
