History

Grosse Hosennahergasse (Large Trouser Seamsters' Lane) is mentioned in 1357 as "circa Muttlaviam" (near the Mottlau River). In 1377/78, with reference to the nearby Koggentor - today's Green Gate - it is called "iuxta Mutilavam circa valvam liburnorum" (by the Mottlau near the gate of the cargo ships). In 1382, the designation reads "circa aquam ad plateam panum" (by the water at the Bread Street).

In 1415, the name "Halvegasse" appears. From the middle of the 15th century, the present name came into use, as evidenced by the designation "Kleine Hosennahergasse" (Small Trouser Seamsters' Lane) occurring in 1459. The Hosennaher were craftsmen who sewed leg coverings and stockings - a forerunner of the later stocking knitters.
