Große Nonnengasse
Mniszki
History
From 1608 onward it is mentioned as Große Nonnengasse (Great Nuns' Lane), though until the 18th century it was usually called "Graue Nonnengasse" (Grey Nuns' Lane), after the adjacent Bridgettine convent founded in 1396. Although older written evidence is lacking, the name certainly dates back to the time of the convent's founding.
The designation "Grey Nuns" refers to the habit worn by the Bridgettine sisters. Today the street bears the translated name Nuns' Lane in Polish.
