Große Ölmühlengasse
Olejarna
History
The lane was originally a dead end and is therefore first called Kehrwiedergasse (Turn-Back Lane) in 1608. This name remained until the 18th century. The first of the old names, Tymmenitz, comes from the Slavic word "temnica," meaning something like a dark, windowless room. In Danzig this term was demonstrably used for a prison until at least 1707, suggesting that the old town prison was located here.
Only from 1763 does the lane appear as Ölmühlengasse (Oil Mill Lane). The designation Große Ölmühlengasse has existed only since 1854.
Even today it bears the translated name "Oil Mill Lane" in Polish.
