Hirschgasse
Dolna
History
Like the other streets of the Niederstadt (Lower Town), this lane was created in the first half of the 17th century following the construction of the bastion fortifications. Around 1650, it was called "3. Grabengasse" (3rd Ditch Lane) after a water ditch running along its length, which continued through the Strandgasse (then 2nd Grabengasse) and the Mittelgasse (then 1st Grabengasse) to the Mottlau River.
The lane was apparently sparsely built up, as it bore no name of its own on maps from the 18th and 19th centuries. Even the military service records counted it as part of the Weidengasse. It was not until 1887 that it received its present name, after city councillor Hirsch.
After World War II, the street was called ul. Dolna (Lower Street). After 1948, the eastern part was separated and renamed after Stefania Sempolowska (1870-1944), a teacher, journalist, and writer who passionately advocated for children's rights. The western part retained its name.
