Hundewall

Motławska

History

Located along the Neue Mottlau, artificially created between 1361 and 1378 for the protection of the granaries. Named after the eponymous bastion, which until 1792 was still partly called Hundewall (Dog Wall) and partly Am Graben (At the Ditch). The first of the two old names applied to the section between the Thornsche Brücke and Brandgasse and goes back to the dogs kept here to guard Granary Island. The second of the old names applied to the section between Schleifengasse and Turmgasse.
