Husarengasse

n. e.

History

Around 1650, this lane was known together with Langgarter Hintergasse as "Schottischer Damm" (Scottish Dam). In 1763, it bore the name "Stinkgang" (Stink Alley) together with Langgarter Hintergasse and Kasernengasse (Barracks Lane). Later, a distinction was made between the "Kleiner Stinkgang" (Small Stink Alley) and the Kasernengasse, the "Grosser Stinkgang" (Great Stink Alley).

Initially it formed together with the Langgarter Hintergasse the Schottischer Damm, and later together with Kasernengasse bore the name Stinkgang. This was subsequently changed to "Erster Stinkgang" (First Stink Alley) — to distinguish it from the Kleiner Stinkgang, the later Kasernengasse. The lane received its present name at the beginning of the 1870s, after the Black Life Hussars (Schwarze Leibhusaren), an elite cavalry regiment stationed here.
