Jakobsbleiche
History
The island between the mouth of the Radaune Canal, the Mottlau, and the Eimermachergraben was called Schild (Shield) since at least 1402 because of its shape. When this street was laid out in 1908, it was therefore also called Schild. However, this designation is not entirely correct, since the mouth of the Radaune Canal was further north until the 17th century, so this street does not actually lie on the former island. In the 18th century, the area of the street served as a bleaching ground and was still called Jakobsbleiche, Mittelbleiche, and Nonnenbleiche in 1792. After the war, only ruins remained of this lane. It was renamed Więcierze (Fish Trap Lane). Since the 1950s, it essentially exists only on city maps, although it continues to be listed in the official street directory.
