Ketterhager Thorgasse

History

Originally, this street only extended from the Hundegasse to the Hintergasse. The part extending to the Vorstädtischer Graben was only created in the 17th century; the gate itself was demolished in 1836. This new part of the lane was called Vor dem Ketterhagischen Tore (Before the Ketterhagen Gate) until the 19th century; in an official gazette of 1817, it is also called Ketterhagische Thorgasse. There was a multitude of speculations about the origin of the name itself. Most probably, as in other cities of the Hanseatic sphere, it was a brothel lane. The area Am Haustor also temporarily bore this name. Today it is called Mischief Lane in translation.
