Kiebitzgasse
Jaglana
History
Kiebitzgasse (Lapwing Lane), like Mausegasse and Stützengasse, appears to have been built up only in the second half of the 15th century, since it was added by a later hand as "platea VII" in the property register begun around 1440. The streets on Granary Island (Speicherinsel) were initially numbered -- once from north toward Milchkannengasse, and a second time from Milchkannengasse heading south. Thus our lane was simply called "Seventh Street."
As late as 1643, it was still listed only by its number. In 1678, a granary called "der Kiewitt" (the Lapwing) is mentioned for the first time on this lane; it was still standing in 1805. The street name was formed after this granary.
Today the street's Polish name translates to "Millet Lane."
