Kleine Nonnengasse

Profesorska

History

In 1422 the Bridgettine convent acquired the old school belonging to Saint Catherine's Church, located "at the corner," with the express condition that the lane by the school remain open for riders and vehicles. In 1449 the same lane by the old school, with its four associated plots, is mentioned as "twergasse do unse prevener ynne wonen" (cross-lane where our prebendaries live).

In 1515 the designation Probenergasse appears. From 1608 the name Kleine Nonnengasse (Little Nuns' Lane) emerges and runs parallel to the old designation - modified to Prüfenergasse - which disappears after about 1700. The name "Prevener" or "Probener" derives from the Latin "praebenda" (prebend, a stipend) and referred to people who had bought their way into the convent with their wealth and in return received lifelong housing and support - in today's terms, retirees.

Today's ulica Profesorska encompasses the former Kleine Nonnengasse and Professorgasse.
