Langgarter Hintergasse

Sadowa

History

Around 1650 this street, together with Husarengasse, was called Schottischer Damm (Scottish Dam), named after the Scottish traders who lived here and who were also numerous in other outlying districts, particularly in the area named after them, Alt-Schottland (Old Scotland). In the 18th century the name Schottischer Damm fell out of use. The section of the lane from Weidengasse to the bend at the Herrengarten barracks was counted, together with Husarengasse, as part of Stinkgang (Stink Passage), while the stretch from the Herrengarten barracks to the rampart was called Kehrwiedergasse or Winkel (Corner). The name Hintergasse has been found since about 1817. From 1920 onward the name Herrengarten applied.
