Lastadie

History

Known since 1361, it originally encompassed the entire area adjoining the Mottlau between the Vorstädtischer Graben (Suburban Moat) and Thornscher Weg. Only the western side was built up; the open eastern side served for shipbuilding. The Lastadie was subdivided into: the actual Lastadie between the Vorstädtischer Graben and Pumpengang; the Mastenfeld (Mast Field) located to the south, which extended to Freters Gang; and the Kahnfeld (Boat Field) further to the south, which extended to Thornscher Weg. Beyond Thornscher Weg, fittingly, was the Dielenmarkt (Plank Market). The name itself appears to originate from Flanders and originally meant ballast. Even today this place bears the name Lastadie, albeit in its Middle Polish form.
