Laternengasse
Latarniana
History
As part of Hintergasse, which ran along the wall, it is described in 1633 as "intra portam, an der Mauer" (within the gate, at the wall). The name Laternengasse (Lantern Lane) has only been found since 1805. Whether the lane should be counted among the trade lanes, or whether equipment and lanterns for the municipal street lighting were stored here -- street lighting was introduced for the Rechtstadt in 1766 and for the remaining city districts between 1795 and 1803 -- has not been determined.
