Lenzgasse

Wiosenna

History

Around 1650, plague barracks stood in this area, and the locality was known as "bei den Pestilenzhäusern" (At the Plague Houses). Only when the area became more densely built up at the beginning of the 19th century did the name Pestilenzgasse (Pestilence Lane) come into use. In 1877 the first two, all too offensive syllables were dropped, shortening the name to the harmless "Lenzgasse" (Spring Lane).

Temporarily, the southern side of Groddeckgasse was also counted as part of (Pesti)lenzgasse. After the war the street still bore the Polish name ul. Wiosenna (Spring Lane) for some time, although only a single house had survived the war there. At the end of the 1940s, this last house too fell victim to the pickaxe - space was needed to expand the tram depot.
