History
In the land register of Speicherinsel (Granary Island) drawn up around 1440, the lane was added only by a later hand as "arta platea quinta" (fifth narrow street). It was therefore apparently not built up until the second half of the 15th century. As late as 1643, it was still listed under the same designation, identified only by its number counted from the Milchkannengasse.
The streets on Speicherinsel were initially numbered twice - once from the north toward the Milchkannengasse, and a second time starting from the Milchkannengasse heading south. Thus the lane was simply called "Fifth Street."
Already in the 17th century, a granary on the lane bore the name "Einhorn" (Unicorn), after which it was called Einhorngasse (Unicorn Lane) on maps from the late 18th century. The present name, in use since 1805, likewise derives from two granaries called "Kleine Maus" (Small Mouse) and "Rote Maus" (Red Mouse). Today the street bears a Polish name that translates as Oat Lane.
