Melzergasse
History
The lane takes its name from the malt house that stood here since at least 1382. Initially it was still called versus valvam, and later, from 1633, after the Fischer Gate that closed it off. In the 17th century, however, the later designation Mälzergasse already appeared. Both names were used in parallel until at least 1800. The southern part of the lane, between the gate and the Vorstädtischer Graben, was only built up in the 17th century after the new fortifications were completed, and was referred to in the sources as "before the Fischer Gate."
