Milchkannengasse

History

The first two names were borrowed from the contemporary designation for the Neue Mottlau, which was called Cloaca or Priveta. The insula in the third name refers to the Werder. The next two names applied to the section between the Grüne Brücke and the Hopfengasse. After 1643, the name Judengasse was transferred to what later became Speichergasse. From 1643 onwards, the lane was increasingly called uniformly along its entire length Milchkannengasse or Lange Reihe. Of these, the former prevailed in the 19th century. It derives from the gate called Milchkanne, which closed off this lane toward the Neue Mottlau since the 14th century.
