Napoleonsplatz

History

This was the name given, on account of its winding paths, to a garden located where the present railway embankment stands at the Olivaer Tor. It was also the first square in Danzig to be named after a famous person who had no connection whatsoever to this place — Napoleonsplatz in 1809. The second attempt of the same kind — around 1840, Friedrich-Wilhelm-Platz — also failed. The Danzigers simply preferred their labyrinth garden to unwavering rulers. After the demolition of the ramparts and the reconstruction of the entire area, this name was only used for the railway bridge. And that is how it remained after the war.
