Opitzstraße
Orzeszkowej
History
According to the Danzig address book, this street still belonged to the village of Zigankenberg (Danziger Höhe district) in 1902. The area was called Halbe Allee in keeping with the Danzig tradition whereby streets built up on only one side had the prefix 'Halbe-' (Half) in their name (the Große Allee was built up on only the western side in this section). After the incorporation of the Danzig surroundings in the first half of the 20th century, this entire area became part of Langfuhr. On this occasion — between 1902 and 1918 — the street, until then called Bergstraße, was renamed Opitzstraße after Martin Opitz von Boberfeld. Since the war, the street bears the name of the Polish writer Eliza Orzeszkowa.
