Pantoffelmachergasse
History
Trippen were wooden raised overshoes that were simply indispensable in the unpaved lanes of the 16th century. In later times, these were made from lighter cork. Since this cork product could also be regarded as slippers, the lane was called Korkenmacher- or Pantoffelmachergasse (Cork-maker's or Slipper-maker's Lane) in 1805. Today its name translates quite prosaically as Cobbler's Lane.
