Plappergasse

History

The designation Langer Krug actually originates from Jungferngasse No. 3. However, in the 15th century it was also used to identify both the Plappergasse and the Kleine Bäckergasse. In 1619, it was listed in the inheritance register as Bäckergasse. From 1624 as Große Bäckergasse, before finally being renamed Plappergasse from 1650. G. Löschin believes the name was derived from the personal name Plappert. However, there is no evidence for this. W. Stephan therefore believes this name more likely belongs to the group of mocking names found in other Low German cities as well. According to legend, the name arose because the stable hands of the Teutonic Order living here flirted so loudly with the "maidens" of the adjacent Jungferngasse. After the war, for several years its name translated as Gossip Lane. Since around 1950 it has disappeared from city maps.
