Sandgrube
Piaskowa
History
The Sandgrube was first mentioned in 1381 under the Latin name "spelunca arenae." It lay as an extension of what is now called Kaninchenberg, which was also counted as part of the Sandgrube. Before the fortification of the Bischofsberg carried out in the 17th century, the sparsely built street extended beyond the present-day fortifications to the intersection with the road that led from Karthäuserstraße to Alt-Schottland just outside the Neugarter Tor – equivalent to the "Schottischer Gang" mentioned in the land registers of the 16th and 17th centuries as a connection between Neugarten and Sandgrube. During the war, the buildings were almost completely destroyed; the street exists today more on paper than in reality.
