Schilfgasse
Szuwary
History
Around 1650, the western side of the lane facing the Mottlau, which was traversed lengthwise by a water ditch, was called Entengasse (Duck Lane), while the eastern side was called Hühnergasse (Chicken Lane). In 1763, both sides of the street were named Mittelgasse (Middle Lane), a designation still in use around 1800. Only since 1814 does the name Schilfgasse (Reed Lane) appear on maps, having previously applied to a part of Weidengasse in the 17th century and to the present-day Strandgasse in the 18th century. At the same time, the designation Mittelgasse passed to the lane later known by that name.
