Schnüffelmarkt

History

A food market that probably emerged from the earlier Mittelmarkt, known since 1574. In 1796 it comprised: from Jopengasse house numbers 28-39 and 41-45, as well as from Brotbänkengasse house numbers 1-8 and 43-45. In the same year, the name Naschmarkt (Snack Market) was also recorded. The woodcut below bears the rhymed caption: The milkmaids, cherry sellers, and cabbage vendors go to sit at the Schnüffelmarkt, bringing plenty of cabbage and turnips, always rustling and creaking, never still. It was therefore apparently a vegetable and confectionery market.
