Schwarze Kreuze
Gnilna
History
The ditch from which this street takes its name still existed in 1800. It was originally connected to the Radaune and formed the oldest city moat of the Old City. In the earliest times, the Samtgasse also belonged to the Faulgraben. As was formerly customary with such streets, the two sides were named differently for a long time. Thus the side facing Hansaplatz was called Kalkgasse in 1581, while the properties toward Jakobsneugasse were called Niedergasse in 1624. The opposite side was in both cases called Schwarze Kreuze (Black Crosses) and included the later Kashubian Market. In the second half of the 18th century, the entire street belonged to the latter. Since 1800, the name has applied in its known extent.
