St. Trinitatis - Kirchengasse

History

The oldest record of this lane comes from an entry in the land register from the year 1643. In an approximately contemporaneous city map, however, it is called Antonisgasse, and this was probably its name in common usage as well. Due to its location, toward the end of the 18th and beginning of the 19th century it was called Kirchengasse, bei Graumönchen (from the color of the Franciscan friars' habits) or Graumönchen-Kirchengasse. The name St. Trinitatis-Kirchengasse appears from 1805 onward, parallel to the above names. Kirchengasse was also temporarily used for the later Pumpengang. The name Tönniesgasse auf der Tromme seems to refer rather to a passage near the Fleischergasse, which was also called Kirchengasse in parallel. The addition "auf der Tromme" points to a drainage ditch in this passage.
