Tagnetergasse
History
After the name Zwirngasse was transferred after 1415 to the lane previously known as Belgardsche Gasse, the Tagnetergasse and Neunaugengasse were together called Tendelmarkt. From the 17th century onward it was then known in its familiar extent as "Tagnetergasse or Kleine Vendet." Regarding the origin of the name, W. Stephan contradicts the Prussian Dictionary and suggests that two words have flowed together in it: the French vendette = retail sale and the German Tand = trinkets, trifles. This combination then supposedly flowed back to Danzig in the Kashubian nasal form as Tagnete. In the Prussian Dictionary, on the other hand, the name is explained as deriving from the French vendette alone. In its common form tandeta it is said to have come to Danzig via the Polish language, and in its Kashubian form tagneta.
