Wallplatz

Wałowy Pl.

History

In the 18th century, the area of today's Wallplatz, including Holzschneidegasse and An der Steinschleuse, was known by the name of the suburban wall gate "Vor dem Neuen Tor" (Before the New Gate), which was located at the end of Fleischergasse and had already been built over by that time. For some of the properties, this designation has been preserved in the mortgage register. The two names encompassed the entire area, namely the later streets Holzschneidergasse, Wallplatz, and An der Steinschleuse. The name Wallplatz became established for its later area of application only in 1805, in the form "Wallplatz am neuen Zeughaus" (Rampart Square by the New Arsenal).
