Weinbrücke

History

This structure was created gradually over time. Initially these were wooden constructions on piles, located at the city gates, which facilitated the loading and unloading of ships. The oldest bridges were situated between the Koggentor and the eastern end of Heilige Geistgasse. During the 14th century these structures expanded to the Fischmarkt and were connected with each other. The individual sections were named after the gates before which they stood. Only from the 17th century onward did the unified designation Lange Brücke (Long Bridge) emerge. The last individual designation to survive was the name Weinbrücke, for the section between Heilige Geisttor and Krantor, which was retained until 1812.
