History
Like the Weißmönchen-Hintergasse, the Weißmönchen-Kirchengasse was named in the 14th century after the old St. George's Hospital. It is first mentioned in documents in 1386 as "Twergasse by dem Rathuse, do man czu Sente Jürgen get" (cross-lane by the town hall, where one goes to St. George's). From 1449 onward it was known as the "Verlorene Gasse" (Lost Lane), a designation that remained firmly established in the inheritance registers of the 16th and 17th centuries. It shared this name with the Weißmönchen-Hintergasse.
On 18th-century maps the lane is called "Münchengasse" (Monks' Lane), also "Münchengasse beim Karmeliterkloster" (Monks' Lane by the Carmelite Monastery). The "Weißmönche" (White Monks) were the Carmelites, who had their monastery here. The current name Weißmönchen-Kirchengasse (White Monks' Church Lane) has been in regular use since 1814.
