The western section of the Werftgasse (Shipyard Lane), which bordered the grounds of the Imperial Shipyard and extended to the Heckergraben (Hecker Ditch), consisted - before the fortification moats were filled in - of the strip of land between the outer and inner moats. The eastern section near the Heckergraben was called "Neuer Weg" (New Way) on a plan from 1859.
The name Werftgasse has been in use in the city directory since 1880, referring to the neighboring Imperial Shipyard that dominated the streetscape.
