Winkel

History

From 1550, this street was called Schottischer Damm together with Husarengasse, after the numerous Scottish traders who settled here; around 1620 it became Mattenbuder Damm. In the 18th century this name fell out of use, and instead the section from Weidengasse to the barracks was counted together with Husarengasse as Stinkgang. The stretch from the barracks to the rampart was called Kehrwiedergasse or Winkel. The name Langgarter Hintergasse came into use in 1817. From 1920 the name Herrengarten applied.
