Zapfengasse
Czopowa
History
This lane, newly laid out in the 17th century on the site of the former Teutonic Order castle, was first called Steinstraße (Stone Street) in 1648, as it was already paved at that time, unlike the neighboring Knüppelgasse. This name also encompassed the later Krausebohnengasse. Later the name Steinstraße was restricted to its continuation, today's Krausebohnengasse, while the lane itself took on the name Zappengasse after the wealthy brewer and merchant Zacharias Zappio, who owned properties No. 3 and 4 in the lane in 1687. The name was pronounced as "Zappe" by the Danzig townsfolk.
