Ziezausche Gasse

History

Already mentioned as Pfeffergasse (Pepper Lane) in 1399, and regularly listed as Pfefferstadt from 1581. The section of Pfefferstadt that bordered the Corpus Christi Bastion was called Ziezausche or Ziessausche Gasse in the 18th century. This name, derived from a personal name, only fell out of use around 1900. The bridge over the Radaune Canal at the opposite end of Pfefferstadt was called Brotbrücke (Bread Bridge) in 1480. The name probably comes from the pepper stored here. However, this is not to be understood as pepper in the modern sense of the word, but rather Turkish pepper or paprika. The price ratios to other goods known from sources rule out Indian pepper as the name's origin. Today it is called, in translation, Spice Lane.
