Schild

History

The island between the mouth of the Radaune Canal, the Mottlau, and the Eimermachergraben has been called "Schild" since at least 1402 due to its shape. When this street was established in 1908, it was also named "Schild." However, this designation is not entirely accurate, as the mouth of the Radaune Canal was further north until the 17th century, meaning this street is not located on the former island. The area of the street served as a bleaching ground in the 18th century and was still referred to as Jakobsbleiche, Mittelbleiche, and Nonnenbleiche in 1792. After the war, only ruins remained of this alley, and it was renamed "Więcierze" (Reusengasse). Since the 1950s, it has essentially existed only on city maps, although it is still listed in the official street directory.
