Schulzengasse

History
The name Schulzengasse (Village Mayor's Lane) is first documented in 1476 and derives from the Schulze (village mayor) of the Hakelwerk who resided in this lane. The Hakelwerk had already been incorporated into the Main Town in 1454.
The lane itself, however, is older than its name. It is mentioned as early as around 1400, though still without a designation of its own. Only when the Schulze - the judicial and administrative head of the Hakelwerk - took up residence here did the lane receive the name that has been handed down to this day.
