St. Katharinenkirchhof

Katarzynki

History

The properties counted as part of St. Katharinenkirchhof (St. Catherine's Churchyard) likely belonged to the earliest endowment of St. Catherine's Church, one of the oldest churches in Danzig, most probably founded shortly after 1227.

In 1653, a section of the church cemetery was ceded to the fathers of the Brigittine monastery in order to create an unobstructed access to the Kagelzippel, the present-day Katharinenkirchensteig.

The designation of the properties now bearing the name Katharinenkirchhof was not entirely fixed: in 1624, the property register lists them as "Kirchhof" (churchyard), whereas the tax records of 1796 and 1806 count them as part of the Kirchensteig (church path). Since 1814, the designation has remained unchanged on maps.

After the Second World War and the transition of Danzig to Polish administration, St. Katharinenkirchhof became ul. Swietej Katarzyny (St. Catherine's Street).
