Büttelgasse

History
The part of today's right-angled Büttelgasse that branches off from the 4th Damm was originally counted as "Kleine Tobiasgasse" (Little Tobias Lane) and considered part of the Tobiasgasse, which ran all the way through to the Dominican monastery. This secondary name was still listed in the address book until 1896. The designation Büttelgasse properly applied only to the section branching off from the Häkergasse.
In 1464 this part of the lane is mentioned without a name, referred to simply as a cross-lane. By 1484, the new Büttelei -- the prison and official building of the Büttel (the city's bailiff, executioner, and court officer) -- had already been relocated here from the Büttelhof on the Portechaisengasse. This fact emerges from a remark by the chronicler Kaspar Weinreich for that year concerning repairs to the city wall adjoining the Büttelei: "Also the wall behind the executioner's house was renewed."
Even today the street bears the same name, translated into Polish.
