Gartengasse

Radna

History

The lane was only laid out in the first half of the 17th century after the bastion fortifications were completed. It was traversed lengthwise by a drainage ditch. Around 1650, the northern bank facing the Mottlau was called Kuckuckengasse (Cuckoo Lane), while the opposite side was counted among the Pestilenzhäuser (the epidemic hospital was located here at the time). By 1763, the name Kuckuckengasse was no longer in use, and both sides of the street belonged to Pestilenzgasse (Pestilence Lane). The current name Gartengasse (Garden Lane) has been in use since 1882/83.

After 1920, it was finally renamed to Groddeckgasse (after Lord Mayor Karl August Groddeck). Today's Polish name translates to Council Lane.
