Jungstädtische Gasse
Nowomiejska
History
Jungstädtische Gasse (Young Town Lane) is a newly laid out street that has borne its name since 1898. It was named after the Jungstadt (Young Town), a rival settlement that was destroyed by the Danzigers in 1454 at the outbreak of their conflict with the Teutonic Order, driven by commercial rivalry. The Jungstadt extended roughly from the grounds of the later Schichau Shipyard downstream to the area of Legan.
The lane was laid out shortly before the turn of the century. Since 1894, it has borne the name Jungstädtische Gasse, as it lay on the territory of the former Young Town. The current Polish name translates as "New Town Lane."
