Kolkowgasse

Zamenhofa

History

After the establishment of the Lower Town in the 17th century, it was first mentioned around 1650 as Dritte Adebargasse (Third Stork Lane). In the 18th century it is called Trägerplatz on plans. In the 19th century it was counted as part of Weidengasse. As early as 1854, when this lane belonged to Weidengasse, properties No. 32 and 33 were owned by the merchant Hermann von Kolkow, who had also been particularly distinguished in poor relief. Since 1906 the lane has borne his name.

After the war the lane was renamed ul. Królikarnia (Rabbit Hutch), and it bears this name to this day. When the International Esperanto Congress took place in Warsaw in 1959, there were apparently plans to rename this lane ul. Zamenhoffa in honor of Ludwik Lejzer Zamenhof. On several maps of that period it already appears under this name. Ultimately, however, it was decided to bestow this honor on the former Rossbachweg in Langfuhr -- which bears the name to this day.
